When lockdown first started, there was a video on facebook going around of someone playing the siren sound from the movie The Purge from his car, while driving around his neighbourhood. While that was funny and I did laugh, it got me thinking. During this season of our lives, where we do have more time on our hands, we should do something practical and free up some of our “social space“. I had been wanting to do this for a while but never found the time to. Over the past couple of weeks, I have sat down and reassessed my social media. I went through who I’m following and who I’m friends with. I did a ‘purge‘ of my own and it is so easy to do. Instead of filling my life with useless content from pages that don’t build up my life but rather feed my boredom, I replaced that with intentional content that encourages me, builds me up and reminds me of God’s goodness.
Some things to consider while going through this process:
- Ask Holy Spirit to help you in this process.
- Who are they to me?
- Why do I follow them?
- Why am I friends with them?/ Am I still friends with them?
- Do I know them personally?
- How does their content make me feel about myself or my life?
- Do they build me up?
- Do I feel inspired by them or not?
- What can their content add or take away from my life?
Most of the pages that I follow on Instagram are people that inspire me spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally. Surround yourself with friends that build you up not tear you down. I have friends that pour into my life and friends that I have the honour to pour into theirs. I feel that this is so important, especially in this time where we are consuming so much content. What are we putting in? Is it growing me or stunting my growth over this time? If you are following them, they must have a place of influence in your life. But, you have control over who you let influence your life.
So, I encourage you to reassess your social media and who you are following.
